Those may scar our world, but they're all fixable with enough initiative. The worst pollution is light pollution.

Every night the stars shine brightly, but try as they might, they can't make themselves seen past the city lights and street lamps. Currently, Venus can be seen when the sun goes down. It's almost due West. Saturn is also out, but it's a little harder to find and it's not as bright. Venus is probably the only "star" you'll see in the night sky, unless you're in the middle of nowhere. Last night I tried to look at the sky... I could make out Venus, Saturn, the top of the Gemini constellation, and the Big Dipper. I think I saw the North star, but since I couldn't see the rest of the Little Dipper, I wasn't sure. The point is, I couldn't find an area dark enough to see any but the brighter stars in the sky.

Sometimes it's possible to see the actual band of the Milky Way in the sky... Or so I've heard. The Earth is in one of the galaxy's arms, so when we're facing the right way, we've got a pretty good view. The problem is, there's no place to go to see it all. There are lights everywhere, polluting the darkness.

Good Song

What if everything you had
Was like a castle made of sand
Would you open up your hand
Or hold on tight

And what if everything was wrong
And no one knew your favorite song
There's no one left to sing along
With you tonight

Chorus from "Favorite Song" by Nine Days

Something to do

Gah! So bored! Weekends are so boring here! What friends I have made are either living off campus, or doing something else. All there is to do is homework... And I'd rather put that off for later. I need to find someone to play ping pong with in the rec room... Or find a group of people to throw my Aerobie "Astonishing Flying Ring". It's supposed to be really nice outside this weekend.

Recently I've been working on a new website that uses PHP... I have no idea how it works. I plan on finding out though. I've been posting on that blog, but the posts are a little more personal than this and I don't feel like divulging its url as of yet.

I got a 97% on the Greek and Roman Culture quiz! Way better than I did on the first one. It's a good thing we get to drop the lowest quiz grade... I actually really studied this time! I'm not used to that... But it worked.

Computer Science is becoming tedious... I'm glad I'll be done with it for the most part after this year. I'm doing Computer Engineering for the circuitry and boolean algebra and whatnot, not the java and C++. It's good to learn it, but I like the other stuff way better.

It's so not fair! A lot of people have finals next week and then are done!!! We still have 5 weeks before finals. We did start later, are on quarters, and had a long winter break... Oh well. I have good classes for the most part, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Now I just need to find something to do...

Way to the end

Sometimes I wish that God and destiny and all that jazz really existed... Simply because it would mean that I didn't have to rely on myself and all of my shortcomings so much.

Wouldn't it be great to live in a world where everything is preordained and there is only one path you will follow no matter what you do? Of course, that has it's drawbacks... But just think: a world where my introverted nature and shyness actually is how I am for a reason and is part of my path through life towards destiny. Sounds great... except for one thing. I would be nothing more than a pawn in the most elaborate game of chess ever devised.

Perhaps it's better the way it is: I choose my own path through life. I overcome the obstacles that I place in front of myself, as well as those placed by others. I decide how to handle situations. And I make my own destiny in a constantly zigzagging and backtracking path that may be so complex that no map could show its minutest detail.

Besides, would you rather walk along the straight path laid out for you through the woods, or leave the path and wander as you please and find your own unique way to the end?

Not like it really matters.

A few billion years ago, when the earth was still molten, a rogue planet collided with it. Orpheus, as this planet is called, hit the earth at an incredible speed. This event caused the cooling earth's surface to once more boil. Much debris was flung into the surrounding space. Over the millennia, this debris collected to become the moon. When man first laid eyes on it in the plains of Africa millennia ago, it would have appeared much larger in the sky. Due to the circumstances of its birth, the moon is slowly moving away from the earth. Our gravity is acting like a slingshot and eventually the moon will leave us. I cannot imagine what the sky would look like without the moon. I also cannot imagine what live on Earth would be like without it. The moon's presence very well could have contributed to the emergence of life on our planet. I wish I could have seen the moon in all its majesty in the sky when it was much closer...

Speaking of the universe, I don't see why some people think that after the Big Bang there has to come a Big Crunch... Why would everything in the universe stop expanding and then come back towards the center? The Big Bang sent everything accelerating away from the center. In the void of space, the only force that can counteract this acceleration is gravity, but with everything so spread out I don't see how any part of the universe could pull another against its outward acceleration. Gravitational forces could alter the trajectory of others, but I don't think there is enough mass in the center of the universe to stop and bring everything back. Science shows that the universe's expansion is actually accelerating still and I believe it will continue to do so. Of course, no one really knows what'll happen for sure, and we are talking trillions upon trillions of years, so it's not like it really matters.

We'll see...

First day down, 48 more to go... and then finals...

Today wasn't too bad. I'm so glad I'm done with calculus for awhile! No math this quarter! I didn't do too bad last quarter though. I got a B! Thank you curved final grading scale! Other than that I got A's. Here's the break down of my classes this quarter:

Spanish 202: This seems to be a class that a lot of people take to fulfill major requirements... The professor doesn't appear to be a native speaker. Most likely this'll be a lot like the high school classes. Oh well.

Greek and Roman Culture: The professor of this class is AWESOME! He's from New York and occasionally slips in to that accent and vulgar language. There will most likely be a lot of work in this class, but that's OK if it gets me out of American history. I may need to take another history class later, but I'm sure there's something else that'll keep me away from American history...

Computer Science III: I have the good professor again for this class. It's great compared to last quarter. We're learning C++ finally and after the first day I already like it better than Java. Due to the lab for this class, my Wednesdays will be packed with just enough time for lunch and classes from 8:30 - 5:30.

Digital Computer Hardware/Switching Circuitry: Sigh... Another foreign professor that's hard to understand. This class has a long lab on Thursdays... I'm not sure if I'll like it though. It sounds interesting...

Introduction to UNIX: The professor just talked the whole time. Usually Wednesday's class will be a lab where we just play around with Linux...

Psychology: I haven't had this yet...

22 credit hours is a lot, but I don't think it'll be too bad. Guess I'll just have to go along with it and see how I feel in a week or so. This weekend is sibs weekend. That should be interesting. I need to stop being so shy and get to know some people. I made some friends in Engineering last quarter, maybe this quarter I can be a little more outgoing and meet some more... We'll see...

One more week

Is this quarter over yet?...

This has not been a very good ten weeks for me. I've done horribly in Calculus 3, procrastinated like hell in English 102, and just couldn't do some stuff in Computer Science 241.

Last quarter, my Calc 2 professor was incredibly boring, but I learned the material and did well on the tests. He collected and graded homework which helped me because I had to do it. This quarter the class was bigger. We were in a lecture hall with those crappy fold-up "desks" instead of a room with real desks like last quarter. And the teacher doesn't collect homework. His style of teaching just isn't very conducive for me to learn and the entire class would agree that there is just something about his tests... You know? I'll most likely get a C... At least it's passing... I'm hoping I might be able to get a B. The test today was easy on most of the questions, but I just couldn't remember how to do two or three of them. Add to that stupid mistakes and I'll probably get a C on it. I can't believe the final is next FRIDAY! Damn you Slilaty! If it was just at the normal Mathematics Common Exam time I'd get Spring Break next Wednesday, but NOOOO!

English was harder than last quarter, but I'm confidant I got an A (Although a B would not surprise me...).

Computer Science was hard this time around. My professor was a new girl from China and it was hard to understand everything she said. Also, she didn't teach the same way Rizki did last quarter. I found myself falling asleep in class and not taking notes. The projects grew increasingly harder. The last one was due today. I could have sworn my code was flawless, but it didn't work right... The due time came quickly though, so I had to submit it as is... My TA graded the one other project I didn't get working (There were 4 projects total) rather leaniently, so I'm hoping for the same on this one. The final next Wednesday shouldn't be too bad because we get to bring three pages of notes.

EGR 190 was a joke. My group just threw together our final project last night. We had started earlier, but the pieces didn't work, so we had to improvise. Given the nature of the class though, we should be fine. That final is on Tuesday and should be a breeze. It's all high school physics stuff.

Next quarter I'll be busy, but I just can't wait for this quarter to be over.

One more week.

An hour and a half...

This piece of Stride lasted an hour and a half...

Better than I expected.

That math test today was hard... Just like the others. But I was more prepared this time. Unfortunately there were a couple problems I wasn't sure about... I'm hoping for a B, but I might get a C.

This weekend I need to work like crazy on English. I have 2 papers to write, one to edit, and a book to finish... I'll be so glad when this class is finally over.

I'm meeting with my EGR 190 group tomorrow to work on our Final Project. I'm not sure how that's gonna work. That class also has a final Exam. I don't know when it is. I hope all of my finals are done early in the 11th week so I can go home early for Spring break.

Next quarter I'm going to have 22 credit hours (Hopefully). I still haven't been contacted about the form I filled out to get that last class. Only up to 20 hours can be scheduled online. More require a form that must be signed by the department head and your counselor. I'm waiting for the signatures so that I can turn it in. I hope they didn't forget about me...

Time to go not do homework some more. I hope when I get that test back it'll be better than I expected.

Kinda small, eh?

This week hasn't started out too well. Monday I wasn't able to solve the Computer Science project. My teacher hasn't changed the due time to that of the other teacher, so it was due by 5PM. Of course, I was a few seconds too late in submitting what I had so that I'd get at least some credit. Tuesday I'm pretty sure I failed my Calculus 3 exam. I didn't do too well on the last one either (68%). I didn't like my professor last quarter, but at least I learned the material. My mind just doesn't cooperate in this class with this professor. Luckily the lowest test score is only 6% of the final grade (The other three are 18% each) and the Final Exam is 30%, so if I can just pick up the pace now I might be able to salvage my grade for at least a B. Luckily, English class was canceled due to snow, so that brightened my day a bit. I don't have high hopes for the rest of the week though. I just want to go home.

The known universe is billions of lightyears, and is thought to go on so far it could be considered infinite. In this grand scheme of things, the 90 some million miles separating us from our sun is a speck, the Earth? an infintesimal speck, us? practically nonexistent. The universe has existed for billions upon billions of years, and will continue to do so. Our lives are less than the quickest flash of time. Makes you feel kinda small, eh?

Hint Hint

You know, I never get any mail around here (hint hint)...

2100 Zink Rd RM 606B
Fairborn, OH 45324

Unrequited Hopes...

11 AM - 3 PM = 4 hours

- 1 hour riding a bus
- 2 hours walking
- 45 minutes waiting for a bus

= 15 minutes...

A four hour ordeal just for 15 minutes of unrequited hopes...

One Thing We Got

So a week or so ago I decided that I was going to start "working out" a little. I don't really want to go to the room downstairs because I'm self conscious... So I'm doing push-ups and sit-ups. I'm weak! I can only do 15 push-ups. And my floor is so hard that I have to do the sit-ups on my bed, so that makes them a little more difficult. Today I did 25 in one sitting. I know, pittiful. I'm working on it.

Of course, my main motivation in all this was Kayla. I wanted to make myself a little better for her, you know, be able to lift her off her feet and carry her without having to have her put her arms around my neck for support... Guess there isn't much point now... But I'm gonna keep going with it anyway. Maybe it's the secret to happiness again. I don't know.

The other day I really screwed up my computer. Luckily I'm a geniou *cough* and fixed it the next day. Now it's working perfectly.

This quarter's a little different than last quarter... My english class seems harder and my Mondays are packed from 9 AM to 3:20 PM. I get really hungry on Mondays... At least my Thursdays are COMPLETELY free! So Wednesday is still the best (As I said in an earlier post.

Just a couple days ago I received Sampson in the mail. He's a rubber duck my friends and I pass around from college to college. I took some pictures of him in certain dangerous predicaments... I think they're funny. I've posted them on my facebook.

Tomorrow I get to have a steak dinner, paid for by my engineering professor. Why? Because we were put into groups and had to build a bridge of K'nex that we then piled weights onto until it broke! The first prize was a steak dinner. We won! 166.5 lbs! That's a new record!

OK, I'll leave you with this:

And I said, "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember the film
and as I recall, I think, we both kind of liked it."
And I said, "Well, that's one thing we got."

WooHoo!

So, school's been in session since Tuesday and my roommate hadn't shown up all week. I've been home for WINTER BREAK since the 17th! And I don't have to go back for the next quarter until January 1st. Ah, I love this nice long break.

On the last week of school before coming home it was time for exams. Of course I had one on Monday and two on Friday with nothing inbetween. Well, I had papers to turn in for two other classes, but they were due anytime before 4 PM Thursday. I just recently was able to check all of my grades. Straight A's! Whoo! I was surprised with Calc 2. I could've sworn I'd get a B.

Well, Christmas is approaching quickly... Which means it'll be my birthday even sooner! I need to go get presents for people... I'm never very good at picking stuff out though...

I went in to Wendy's the other day to see about working... Connie, the manager that hired me, recognized me and told me to leave my number, they'd call. I got the feeling that meant "if they need me"... So I should probably find something else to earn some money...

Oh well. It's good to be home.

Cool. Next week is finals week. I've almost made it through the first quarter of my college career! On Monday the 13th I have my Calculus final in the afternoon. I still have not found out my grade on the second test... I have a feeling I'm probably going to get a B in that class. English and the Spanish movie class just have papers that I have to turn into the teacher's mailbox anytime during finals week. That leaves Spanish and Computer Science, both of which are on Friday the 17th. I'll have an A in both of those... And damn near a 100% in Spanish. After that I get to go home for winter break which lasts through January 1st!

OK, on a completely unrelated note... Why do smart people do such stupid things? Or more particularly, why do they lack sense? I don't mean all smart people... I'm thinking of one in particular *coughmysistercough*. I know she's smart, but recently it's become harder to see that. A deadbeat boyfriend that is arround constantly is the problem. First off, he's an idiot. I know he graduated from high school, but I think he got pretty lucky there. He has this personality that any normal person can't stand. You know those people who, you don't know why, but they just get on your nerves? He's one of them. He's 21... She's 17! He has the mentality of a 12 year old. Tempertantrums aren't uncommon and he has a very short temper. The smallest sarcastic comment can send him into a cussing fit and he'll walk out the door... It's actually pretty funny sometimes. I just don't see what she sees in him. She could do much better... She deserves so much better. In the end, it's her life, if she wants to screw it up I guess there's not much I can do about it.

Scary Wednesday!!!

Me asusta, me asusta!

This Wednesday, AKA TOMORROW, I have my second math test! I was afraid of that first one and didn't do so bad... But this one's really scary! Not only do I need to study for that, but I also need to do the rest of the math homework that's due tomorrow. Maybe that'll be part of my studying. Wish me luck.

On Saturday I went to a programming contest. I had no intention of winning, I just wanted the extra credit my CS teacher was offering. We were paired up and given a packet of problems to solve with programming. My teacher said we'd get 2% to our final grade for just showing up and 1% per problem successfully completed (Up to 3%). So my partner and I each get 4% extra credit. Pretty cool, eh? We did about average for our level.

OK, so Napster's pretty cool when you get a free subscription. Unfortunately the songs are all copy protected and whatnot. Luckily, I found a program that "fixes" that so I can put them on my iPod. It cost me $15, but has already more than paid for itself.

Math test... Scary... I'd better get started on that homework.

Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday

OK, that math test? I got an 82. Seeing as the class average was 66 and the class median was 68, I think I did pretty well. I need to do better though.

I've finally caught up in the math lab. Yay.

Wednesday is my favorite day of the week. It means its halfway over. I'm done with classes at noon. The classes I do have are Spanish, math, and computer science. Spanish is fun and review, math is math... I like math, and computer science is neat. We're finally starting the cool programming stuff. Wednesday is also my day to stay up late because Thursdays are free until 4. You may ask, "If Thursday only has one class that isn't until 4, shouldn't it be your favorite?" NO! Sure I get to sleep in, but because it's pretty much a free day I use it to get work done... And since I have a five page explanatory essay to write for Tuesday (Which happens to be my least favorite day) I'll probably start it tomorrow.

I scheduled my Winter quarter today. It has two less credit hours than this fall quarter I'm in now, but I think the workload will be substantially greater... That sucks.

My computer is now a dual boot machine. I've got Windows XP and Ubuntu 6.06 (Linux) now. Linux is weird! But I figured, if I'm going to be programming and whatnot I should try it out. As soon as I learn how to use it better I may spend more time in it.

OK, that's all.

Whew!

This morning I had my first test in Calculus 2. I haven't updated in awhile and I probably won't, so now's the best time to get caught up. I realise that if anyone actually reads this they might want to take a break or two, so I will give each section it's only little title for easy access if a reader decides to come back later. OK, here goes.

Este fin de semana

I am going home yet again this weekend. This may sound sad, but I haven't spent a weekend (Other than orientation) here at school. This is the first time I don't really have a reason... But I can make one up.

First off, I was really sick last week and this week I've just started feeling better (Thanks to Prednisone. If only the stuff didn't have bad long term use effects). My mom found some book at the library about a special diet for people with gastrointestinal problems like myself, so I decided to give it a go. Unfortunately I can't have any food I'd normally eat, and no sugar! The book does have some recipes in it and the ones we've tried so far are fairly good. I could say I'm going back to stock up on some more food that follows the diet.

Another reason is that I don't really have any reason to stay here. If I can go home and get some good food for a weekend, why not? We do have these RTA buses here that can take you downtown and stuff for $1.25. It's possible, theoretically, for me to use them to visit Kayla over at UD. I haven't tried it yet because the only day I'd do it is Saturday and I haven't been here. I would have tried tomorrow, but Kayla didn't know how I'd feel (I have been sick recently) and she didn't want to get her hopes up and be disappointed. I guess that's another reason I'm going home... Nothing to look forward to here.

You know, I really should be doing homework so I don't have to worry about it this weekend... Unfortunately I have to wait until 5 to get picked up today instead of 3 like a normal Friday, so I'll have plenty of time. OK, time to talk about life here at WSU.

La vida estudiantil

Here at WSU we have some nice dorm rooms, especially in the Honors Dorms where I live. They're pretty big and every two rooms share a bathroom. That's nice because an entire floor doesn't use the same bathroom... It's also quite disgusting at times... especially with four guys. Is it sad that I'm the cleanliest out of the four? Sometimes that toilet is just so gross I want to throw up! Luckily I have Clorox wipes...

My roomate's a pretty quiet guy. He listens to crappy music too loud with headphones and whisper-sings along. I can never tell if he's doing homework or drawings another wacky anime picture for his wall... or anime club. Sometimes he just creeps me out. And he stays up til 1 or 2 in the mornings on his laptop. I try to go to bed before midnight, seeing as I have a class at 8:30 all but one day of the week. It's a good thing I'm a heavy sleeper. I look forward to the times I get the room to myself.

Las clases

None of my classes are really that different from high school. I don't have any huge lecture classes. Actually, a lot of my classes are small. Yay Honors Program. OK, let's start at the beginning of my day.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I have SPN 201 (Second year Spanish) at 8:30 in the morning. It lasts until 9:35. There are only 7 of us in the class, so I can't really hide in the back. Also, our teacher is puertoriqueña... She talks in Spanish nearly the whole time and her English is very accented. The homework usually isn't too bad. It's all review for me so far. Oh, and get this, my Spanish teacher is my English teacher's wife!

Afte Spanish I go to MTH 230 (Calculus II) from 9:45 to 10:50 on the same three days. My professor's name is Svobodny... No idea what nationality that is, but I can tell you he seems like a normal boring math guy. I'm glad I didn't get some Asian guy I couldn't understand. The size of the class is just like AP Calc last year. The only difference is that the class isn't really involved in the teaching... It's all pretty much a lecture that goes too fast to follow all of it. Homework is due and assigned every Wednesday. The really weird thing about the class though is that there's a lab for it...

Every Tuesday from 8:30 - 10:30 I have a math lab. We have to use a computer program to do very tedious, hard math problems. Attending these periods is optional, but by the end of the quarter you have to turn in 10 points worth of lab exercises. You can only turn in two at one time. Some are worth 1, some 2, and some 3... They should all be worth more as far as I'm concerned. This is the only really challenging part of the class... Other than the subject matter, which is getting increasingly nonsensical.

Back to Mondays and Wednesdays, I have CS 240 (Computer Science I) from 11 to 12:05. This class is interesting. We learn java coding. The professor is a very large man... And he just sits in front of the class and talks about what he writes on his tablet PC, which is projected in front of the class. We get assigned Lab exercises and projects that have to be submitted online by a certain date. Every Tuesday at 2:15 I have a lab period to work on that, but a lot of work has to be done out of class, luckily all on a computer.

Every Tuesday at 4:10 I have (ENG 101) English. The class is less than 20 people and we sit around and talk about what we wrote for class... That's about it. We're usually assigned some paper to work on for next week and everything is submitted online. A lot of time in class we all actually sit at computers and read a discussion board before we turn around and talk about it... It's interesting.

Each Thursday at 4 I have a Spanish & Latin American Film class... Don't ask. It's part of my Learning Community... There are four of us. My English teacher also does this class. All we do is watch a Spanish movie and then post on a discussion board online about it before the next Thursday... Woohoo...

Tiempo libre

Obviously, there's a lot of down time... I usually don't have anything to do though... Other than homework or waste time. I haven't really met anyone, and I don't really plan to try all that hard. Recently I haven't felt well, so a lot of that time was spent trying to sleep. You'd think I'd never have to worry about doing homework at the last minute with that kind of time at my hands... Well, right now I'm wasting it on this instead of homework. I tend to waste more time than I use... Oh well.

El fin

I don't really have anything else to share about college. It's not really that special... I'm scared about my first math test on the 11th. The food's OK, only I can't eat most of it on this new diet. Not sure how long that'll last. I get bored easily... So an IM here or there would be nice... That's about it.

Rick out.

Kayla

Now I have converted 5 people to Miranda! Of course, I was too... I usually am... or boring at least. Anyway, we played some tennis. I was awesome! That only lasted about half an hour 'cause I had to go eat dinner, but the day was far from over.

Next, I suggestd rollerblading. The two of us went around her neighborhood for about 20 minutes or so... Why so short you ask? Well, I went down a hill, saw the road turn sharply at the bottom, tried to slow down, lost my balance, fell, skidded a little ways, got up, and headed back towards Amanda's house. Don't worry, my injuries are just a scraped, slightly bloody right forearm, one small, and another quite large, abrasion on my left "haunch", and somehow tiny scrapes on the joints of each finger on my left hand... It hurts to sit, but I'm fine.

After that little mishap Amanda searched the internet for stuff to do in Gahanna. Not surprisingly, she found nothing. We then decided to go to Rita's. On the way there she called Corey and got him and Alex to join us. They left after finishing their fruity dessert thingies, so Amanda and I went to my house.

After beasting at a few videogames, I got some board games out. I won at those too. So then Amanda looked at college websites for awhile and then we watched Ray.

After that I took her home. We listened to Bob Segar in the car. Oh yeah.

Over all, today wasn't so boring.

Wright State it is

After all my searching, Wright State is the only school that really stands out. It's not the best university, but that doesn't mean it's not a good education. No matter where I go to school, when I graduate I'll get a job with the starting Computer Engineer salary. The reason places like Case cost so much is for the prestige. Case has far superior networking and connections than Wright State, but Case is big and expensive. Wright State's campus is the only one out of the four colleges I visited that I really like. I was able to talk with one of the heads of the engineering department today and I liked what I heard. Wright State is a very good school. The first time I visited I didn't expect much, but I was very pleasantly surprised. It was just as good the second time, maybe better.

Made up my mind. AGAIN!

OK, I would like to denounce my previous two theories on lightspeed travel. They are based on a principle I no longer believe to be true: Time dilation.

Time dilation is a THEORY that states that the faster you move, the slower time progresses for you and the faster it progresses for everyone else. My previous two theories kinda half supported that... Well, now I think that time dilation is the STUPIDEST thing of which I've ever heard!

Time is absolute. Nothing we do can affect it in anyway. It is not tangible and will continue ticking on as it always does, always has, and always will.

If this is the case, then the speed of light is no more a barrier than the speed of sound. Sure, weird things happen when you reach it, but it IS surpassable.

So if you're traveling at the speed of light on a round trip to a star 3 lightyears away, it will take you three years to get there and three years to get back. When you return to Earth, six years will have passed. If you travel three times the speed of light, a round trip would be two years. There are no fluctuations in time.

Because mass increases as speed increases, traveling near and beyond the speed of light would require engineering to combat the gravitational forces on the "ship" and its passengers. Although we do not have these capabilities now, they are possible.

If I am right and time does NOT dilate, traveling to the stars is still quite a long journey, even at many times the speed of light. Therefore, there are only two theoretical ways of making voyages to the stars plausible: Space ships that can travel THOUSANDS of times the speed of light, or wormholes.

Neither of these options are proven to exist or be possible, and as of yet we're still stuck with a measly 25 miles per second for our fastest flying ship. Voyages through space are still quite a ways off.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rfredley.blogspot.com/2005/11/i-think-im-wrong-again.html' title='I THINK I'M WRONG!... What you see is what that star looked like 10,000 years ago, so if you traveled at the speed of light to reach that star, when you get there it will appear as it truly was when you saw it.

OK, say that star blew up 7,000 years ago, but we still see it's light from 10,000 years ago. When you get there it will have been gone for 7,000 years.

BUT HERE'S THE REALLY SCREWED UP PART!

The light from Earth that you'd see would be the Earth from when you left, meaning that the Earth is actually 10,000 years older. So when you go back it will be to the true Earth from your viewpoint at the star 10,000 lightyears away.

In conclusion:

Traveling at lightspeed (Or close seeing as the differences in time allowed for traveling would only be a few years), a round trip to a star 10,000 lightyears away would only result in a 10,000 year lapse on the original departure point.

Light speed

According to Einstein, it is impossible to travel at or beyond the speed of light. Strange things happen as you approach light speed. Time for the object traveling would slow down, while time elsewhere would progress normally. What this means is that if you went 10,000 lightyears at a speed as close as possible to the speed of light, you'd reach your destination in a few hours, days at most; however, 10,000 years would have passed both where you came from and where you went. So a round trip would mean missing 20,000 years on Earth. So it stands to reason that if you could travel at the speed of light time would completely stop for you (Instantaneous travel), but continue normally elsewhere once again. If you surpass the lightspeed barrier, time would go in reverse for you, however, once again, normal time would pass the same. There is no way to avoid that one major problem.

Religion

Religion is just a theory. Scientists didn't know how the universe got here, so they theorized that there was a big explosion. There are different theories on how the moon and Earth formed, and how all planets form. Religion is just another theory for why things are. The problem is, religion consists of nothing but fanatical followers. What started out as theory has become a "truth", an obligation because people became fanatical about it. If someone wrote a book explaining the Big Bang theory as if it really happened, and people started following it and praising it, that'd be the same as religion.

When man evolved enough to wonder why the sun rose and set, he could not deduce the reason. This is how the supernatural began. Early man fabricated stories to explain things. These hominids had no proof of their stories, or theories, they just wanted a reason. This is how gods came to life. Man created God, it's not the other way around.

I'm not saying science is any better. I read on NASA.gov that a huge star that scientists thought would become a black hole became a neutron star instead. Scientific theories are just as made up as religion. No matter how logical any theory may seem to anyone, they all fall apart. "God created the universe", well, who created God, and if God has always existed, how do he come into existance in the first place, and where does he exist, and if He created the universe what was there before, etc.? The same goes for all the scientific theories too. There is too much contradiction now, and unfathomable questions in the past.

Religion serves no purpose. Some people tell me it teaches morals, right and wrong. That's common sense. Any person should be able to decide for himself the difference between right and wrong and still be a functioning member of the human society. Morals are tought from experience that can be learned anywhere. And some people truly believe every single thing the Bible says. First, meanings have been changed through the translations, so no one really knows what it originally said. There's also no proof that it is what it claims to be, and if it is truly the writings of the disciples (New Testament), they could have been altered by the church. Why isn't Jesus's teenage life in the Bible? It's been edited out.

And why Jesus? I'm sure there was more than just one man who claimed to be a great prophet or an incarnation of God. What made Jesus so special to make it into the Bible? He's just a man. The Koran follows Mohammad. What made the Muslims think he was so special? I guess it's just a right time, right place kinda thing.

So anyway... The beginning ruins every logical theory. What was there before the universe? How did that get there? And so on for infinity. There HAS to be a beginning somewhere, but even that doesn't make sense, because how did everything come out of nothing? It's impossible to know. People should not dwell on the past, but instead live the present and prepare and better the future. Who cares how everything got here? It's here let's make the best of it without having to worry about what got us here and what will happen to us when we die. Death is natural, and until you die, you'll never know what really happens.

In general, people are decent and functioning, with or without some theory of everything. Some day everyone will realize this and the churches won't be able to threaten the people with God and Hell and whatnot anymore. Too bad that won't be anytime soon...

I want bacon!

In Cleveland visiting Case Western!

Sweet! That way I can throw it in an open field with lots of people where there aren't any curbs...

Homecoming

Well, the Homecoming dance on Saturday was -- well, Homecoming. Typical loud music, big, sweating crowds of people. It wasn't too bad though. I attempted to dance to some of the faster songs... (I can't dance at all!) The slow dances weren't much better... I was forced into one, accepted to do another and the last one was a little too fast for my liking, but good nonetheless. I ended up not asking anyone to dance... Oh well. I ended up dancing, right? What does it matter how it happened? I think the best part of the night was dinner though.

We went to Max & Erma's. Service was slow but everyone got plenty of time to talk and joke and whatnot. It was fun.

I found out I do have the tiniest bit of rythm somewhere in me. Maybe I should take swing or latin dance lessons. That would be fun. Anyone know where? Or is anyone interested? I'd be making a fool of myself, but I'm good at that.

Disc Golf was awesome! I got third place... Out of 6! So I didn't do too badly. I had originally thought to go to Blendon Woods and play Disc Golf earlier in the week and asked a few people (I only have 4 discs, so if only four people went, they wouldn't have to pay to rent one). Well, they all bailed on me... I kinda saw it coming though... I hoped it wouldn't happen, but I knew it most likely would. Oh well. Today I asked a few people and it turned into six of us going (Don't worry, Paul had 3 dics). Here's how the final scores broke down:
Paul: -4 (59)
Blink: +1 (64)
Me!: +3 (66)
Sara C.: +12 (75)
Kayla D.: +23 (86)
Clarissa B.: +26 (89)
It was fun.

We marched awesomely tonight! Some of the lines were a little askew, but that's OK!

On a completely unrelated topic, the Homecoming dance is tomorrow. This year I'll actually have to ask people to dance... Oh well, It shouldn't be too hard. I could always hope for one of those Sadie-Hopkins (Is that right?) dances, where the girls ask the guys, but then I wouldn't get to dance... That would be almost depressing. Chances are there won't be one of those though. And knowing our school, there'll be like three slow songs, and the rest'll be rap and stuff... I guess I'll just have to wait and find out how it goes.

Sarah got her license last night. That's scary. It's also annoying because everyday she goes out to lunch, I have to move the seat back when I go to leave. But she got me icecream, so it was almost OK.

Enough rambling.

Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world
Except for Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-lola
"Lola" by The Kinks

Opossum!

A opossum my mom found in the trash can. Elaine made me :-P (That's my special talent, the popping noise!)

OK, let me recount my day...

I woke up at 6:10 and took my usual morning shower. Then I ate my usual Eggo for breakfast (After having dried off and getting dressed of course). Out of habbit, I turned off my away message, not expecting to get any IMs... And then the unthinkable happened -- !

I got and IM. It was from Nate. He plays saxophone in the Freshman band, but anyway. He was wondering why I was awake. I thought this question was odd, seeing as it was a normal morning. Here's our conversation:

Nate: y r u on
Rick: Because I'm awake.
Nate: apparently the school does't have power
Rick: For some reason I don't believe that
Nate: some one who is at the school told us

I wasn't convinced... But then the next-door-neighbor, Lauren, IMed me. She said there wasn't any school and told me that it said so at WNCI.com, so I checked. She was right! It was awesome! So then I fell asleep on the couch.

Later I woke up and put my contacts in and brushed my teeth and washed my face and then got on the computer. I was bored, so I played Rise of Nations, which is fun sometimes, but I stopped after only one battle. Then Elaine had the brilliant idea to go play disc golf at Blendon Woods! I was looking forward to it, but she (and Tony and Morgan) decided that they didn't want to pay the $2, so we just tossed a frisbee, a football, and a little vortex around in a field for an hour and a half. And then it was time for lunch.

Elaine told us to follow her, but didn't tell us where we were going. Of course, we went along with it, we figured she'd go straight there. First we turned left out of Blendon Woods onto Cherry Bottom, which was sensible. Next was a right turn on Morse, this struck me as odd, seeing as Stoneridge is very close and to the left, but I kept following. Then we turned left onto Stygler, so I figured we must be going to Granville. However, next was a left turn onto Ridenour, followed by a left turn onto Sumption, which just loops back to Ridenour, then a left back onto Ridenour, then a right (I believe) onto some other road, which lead to a right onto Old Ridenour, which took us to Granville (Technically U.S. 62). There we turned left and ended up going to Wendy's. Whoo hoo for the scenic route! Not whoo hoo for the wasted gas!

After eating I went home and mowed, then took my second shower of the day. After that I went to the High school to keep Elaine company for awhile (She was volunteering at 6th grade band fittings) before going to Max & Erma's for dinner with Sara, Alex, Amanda, and Kayla. They just kinda left me be at my end of the table, which was fine for me, easier to eavesdrop when you're not involved in the conversation. Then it was time to go to another meeting at Selvey's house about the Halloween Party... We are so screwed... But oh well. And then I came home and here I am typing this. I have no idea what I'll do now, but that's OK, it'll probably be something boring.

PS -- Don't forget to fill out my survey thing!

<img src="http://www.audioblogger.com/media/images/audioblogger.gif" class="audImg"border="0" alt="this is an audio post - click to play" />

Survey thing

I usually don't put these things in my own journal... Man, I suck at bowling. It was fun though. Me and Sarah went over to the church to practice manuverability (She hit a cone this morning). I mean, I don't really dwell on stuff. Something bad happens, shrug my shoulders, analyse what I did wrong, and try to avoid making the same mistake again. Is that a bad thing? School wasn't too hard. I tried the plan that I mentioned in the last entry... It only half worked, but that's better than not at all... I just need to stop being so cautious and chicken. I think I can manage that.

Marching band was good too. I stayed after school and played Battleship and Candy Land before going to DQ. Then, back at the high school, we played some "volleyball" and passed a vortex. And then came the rain. I ended up sitting under the overhang for 2 hours or somethin' like that, but it wasn't too bad. The bus ride with Elaine was fun. We marched pretty well. On the way home we had to sing songs to keep Elaine awake.

I wanted to go bowling after band, but no one else wanted to, so that got vetoed. If I'm still awake I might go midnight bowling with my sister... Tell me if you're interested in joining. I think it's a little more expensive, but it's unlimited games from 12 - 2 I think.

And again, but I've got a plan.

I had the perfect opportunity today (Elaine, you know what I'm talking about)... It's from a campfire story from cubscouts, and it went something like this:

OK, so there's this kid. Let's call him Johny. He turns 3 in a couple days, so his dad asks him what he wants. In his little 3-year-old voice he says, "Green ping pong balls!"

Well, his dad can't find any, so he gets him a tricycle instead.

On Johny's 6th birthday he gets a magic kit, you know, it teaches you how to do magic tricks. Of course, he really wanted green ping pong balls.

On his 12th birthday he gets a new bike, and on his 16th, a car (His dad's one of those guys who has a lot of money and spoils his children).

When Johny graduates from college, his father buys him a house in the area where Johny's new job is. And as a house warming gift, Johny receives a big screen TV.

Now, all this stuff is fine and dandy, and Johny was happy and all, but something was missing... Every year he told his father he wanted green ping pong balls, and every year he got something else.

Well, one day Johny got into a car accident, and there was nothing the doctors could do for him. They called his dad and said that Johny was on his death bed and wasn't expected to make it to tomorrow. His dad rushed to the hospital and asked his son if there was anything he could do for him. Johny replied with a cough, "I would really like some green ping pong balls." His father says, "OK, I'll find you some," and rushes out of the hospital.

He goes to the mall and looks throughout the entire building, but there are no green ping pong balls to be found. He checks every store in the city, but is unlucky. It's getting late and he wants to get back to the hospital with his son. He doesn't want to disappoint him, but there just aren't any green ping pong balls. But just then! As he's approaching the hospital entrance, across the street is a small booth that happens to be selling green ping pong balls! He rushes over and buys them all and takes them up to his son who is just barely alive.

Johny smiles and seems very happy and tells his father, "Thanks dad." The father wonders and asks, "All these years you've asked for green ping pong balls. Why? What do you want them for?" Johny replies, "Well, I've always wanted them because--" And he exhales his last breath.

Great story, eh?!

For my birthday I want... In reality, I'm a shy introvert, except with people I've known since elementary school. I've always been the quiet type. But when I need to appear like I'm an extrovert who could just go up to anyone and talk, I can usually pull it off. I guess it's a way to make friends... Trick myself into thinking I could just talk to anyone, no matter how stupid I think I sound. Ignore the voice telling me what I should or shouldn't say that thinks way to far ahead. I find it very difficult to go up to someone I've never met before and say, "Hi, I'm Rick, who are you?" It just doesn't work. I think too much about what may or may not happen.

Sarcasm is my specialty, and those who have gotten to know me, know that too... and of course, there are the people who take it seriously. Maybe I should try to incorporate my extrovert fasade into my normal self. I don't think the people I can really talk to and enjoy being around think of me as introverted. I could be wrong...

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I need to stop worrying about making a fool of myself. I need to go more with the flow, and if the flow calls for me to look stupid, I shouldn't have much of a problem. Heh. I need to just go up to someone and ask if she wants to do something this weekend. I need to stop worrying so much. That's my problem. If I could just accept what happens and make the best of it, I'd probably be much more personable. I'll get to work on that.

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

Great song ("Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls).

I tried to figure out the meaning of this song the other day... Always thinking...

Sometimes I wish there was a way to just turn off my mind... All this thinking is affecting me. It's changing how I feel about things. It's making me want something that I will, most likely, never have, and I'm not really sure that it's what I truly want because it goes against my previous thoughts. A time machine would be nice right about now... Just skip ahead and see what happens to my life... Or a "what if?" machine that could show me a scenario to a what if question... The scenarios in my head get too jumbled and intertwined. The ability to read minds would also come in handy... If only I knew what others thought about me or certain subjects, I'd be able to make the smartest move. All three of those things would be quite helpful to me now... Too bad they don't exist... So I guess I'm stuck here... Thinking.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rfredley.blogspot.com/2005/09/thinking-always-thinking.html' title='Thinking...
